Vitamin C: Skin Superstar - OxyGeneo Super Facial

Vitamin C: Skin Superstar

Each of us is born with abundant levels of Vitamin C in our skin, but over time these levels naturally deplete. This decline is accelerated by UV damage and pollution. This can leave skin looking and feeling dull, old, uneven, and less plump. Vitamin C is one beneficial product that has the ability to revitalize your skin. It works wonders to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

What is Vitamin C?

This vitamin is a water-soluble antioxidant that is a natural and critical component of healthy skin. It can shield the skin from environmental stressors such as free radical damage. Since Vitamin C serums are acidic, they aid in the skin’s natural regeneration process to repair damaged skin cells. This leaves the skin tremendously brighter and smoother. Moreover, this antioxidant accelerates the production of collagen and elastin. These are protein fibers that make your skin plump and prevent sagging. Thus, it is best known for its anti-aging, damage-repairing properties that can reduce scars, hyperpigmentation, and protect against UV-induced damage.

How can you get some Vitamin C in Your System?

Foods containing this antioxidant include: oranges, blueberries,  broccoli, strawberries, and sweet potatoes. However, Vitamin C can be bought in tablet form as oral supplements, or alternatively, applied topically through serums (the latter is more effective for maintaining healthy skin). When purchasing a serum, look for the key ingredient called “ascorbic acid” which is the most stable and effective form of Vitamin C skincare products and also works most effectively when combined with Vitamin E.

Apply the serum before moisturizer to achieve the best results. Begin with a low frequency of use to ease into use, as this is the most effective for the skin, according to dermatologists. This means beginning by applying it every other day in the morning, typically 3 to 5 drops for the entire face, before using it on a daily basis.

Keep in mind that Vitamin C is extremely sensitive to air and light, and will oxidize over time if routinely exposed. Thus, only purchase this vitamin from an opaque bottle. If the serum itself starts to darken from a light clear yellow to brown, discontinue use of the product.

What Percentage Should I be Using?

If your primary concern is to reduce the appearance of dark spots, try out a rich-textured 25% Vitamin C serum. Apply it to wherever your skin appears discoloured, dull, and/or dry. If you have sensitive skin, begin with a low concentration to test whether you are allergic to this vitamin. Interestingly enough, research shows that concentrations as low as 0.6% provide antioxidant and anti-aging benefits to the skin!

The long list of benefits with this vitamin goes on, it is certainly something to give a try to revive dull skin!
